Research partnership set to advance medication safety in aged care

BESTMED and Macquarie University partner in new research project
Research to help consumers and families

Partnering with Macquarie University in a new research project, BESTMED is set to showcase how the application of intelligent technology can relieve the burden of medication management in residential aged care facilities.

The two-year project has been made possible through a $992,386 grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council Medical Research Future Fund and awarded to the lead investigator, Professor Johanna Westbrook, Director of the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation.

Despite the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety identifying widespread issues associated with medication management, it remains an area of concern. The latest Sector Performance Report for April – June 2022 shows medication management as the top-listed complaint issue for the period.

The BESTMED team led by Nass Hijazi, CEO will work with the investigator team to benchmark and develop functionality across several areas including: generating standardised quality indicator data for care monitoring, benchmarking and to drive real-time local improvement activities.

“It’s opportunities like this that give us additional insights into how technology can be further used to enhance medication management and assist care providers, consumers and their families,” said Mr Hijazi.

“With increasing requirements in the sector and staffing pressure, BESTMED is committed to using the right technology to bridge the gap and provide scalable, real-world solutions to improve safety and reduce staff workload.”

BESTMED will be working in partnership with the chief investigator team from Macquarie University, Deakin University, University of Sydney, University of Western Australia, Bond University and Monash University. Project partners include the Aged Care Industry IT Council, Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, Consumers Health Forum of Australia, Western Sydney Local Health District, Melbourne Health, Southern Cross Care and Bupa Aged Care.

As Australia’s favourite end-to-end eNRMC medication management provider, BESTMED is an industry leader in developing systems to improve safety, efficiencies and reporting to meet the changing requirements in aged care. Currently, over 500 aged care homes caring for over 50,000 residents rely on BESTMED daily to relieve the burden of medication management. BESTMED’s cloud-based, real-time platform supports aged care providers to achieve greater compliance and seamless stakeholder interactions, leading to best-practice consumer care and improved consumer outcomes.
